Outreach Beyond Our Parish

As followers of Jesus Christ, we have been commissioned to provide for the poorest among us and to work toward change in our social structures when change is needed.  Catholic social teaching principles call us to provide varied opportunities for community members to live out their gospel call.

Please consider the community outreach and volunteer opportunities below.

5% Weekly Giving

Times are difficult for so many. The finance council and the parish staff have discussed how best the parish can respond to the increased need that we are experiencing through phone inquiries, walk-ins and the increased requests from various charitable agencies.

Since September 2009, the parish has been giving 5% of the weekly collection to a charity or agency that serves the poor and needy.

Sandwich Builders

Once a month on Friday evenings during the academic year, we gather to make hundreds of sack lunches for the homeless.

This is a big group effort – and a great way for your whole family to participate! We rely on generous volunteers like you to help with:

  • Donating food and supplies
  • Making and assembling the lunches
  • Driving lunches downtown to the distribution center on Saturday morning

St. James Inn

St. James Inn has always had a strong connection to our parish. With the help of our parishioners, St. James Inn was founded in 1988 by our beloved Fr. Patrick Traynor, CSP to provide comforting and dignified lodging and other related services to hospital outpatients or family members who have loved ones undergoing critical inpatient medical treatment in the UCLA Health System and other nearby hospitals.

St. James Inn now operates three homes and has provided over 27,000 guest days at no cost to guests. Members of the Saint Paul Catholic Community continue to serve on the Board of Directors and fundraising committee. Additionally, we host the Inn’s annual auction and dinner on our campus each spring.

Together in Mission

“Jesus calls us to open our hearts and extend a helping hand to those who are most vulnerable and most in need. And sadly, as we know, the number of needy families and children in our midst continues to grow with each passing year.” Archbishop Gomez invites Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Community to make our annual commitment to help those Archdiocese parishes and schools that need our support.

Your pledge makes a huge impact – right here in our city. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
