Debate Club

SPA Debate Club is a member of the Middle School Public Debate Program, and debates in the Pacific Coast League, which consists of Harvard-Westlake, Windward, Brentwood, Marlborough, Ridgecrest, Oakwood, and Chadwick.  The teams compete in 5-6 tournaments each season culminating with a league championship, and finally the MSPDP International Championship at Claremont McKenna Colleges.  The debate club is designed to teach public speaking, reading comprehension, critical thinking, listening, and debating skills as well as research, organization, and argumentation.   Debate improves listening skills as well as note-taking techniques and fosters the collaborate learning that is crucial as students matriculate to high school and beyond.  Students will also learn trial skills such as direct and cross-examination, opening and closing arguments and will be offered the opportunity to participate in the Constitutional Rights Foundation Mock Trial Competition.

Debate is taught by Marcia Alessi, an active member of the California State Bar since 1987.  Ms. Alessi practiced law in the civil litigation field.

Debate Club meets after school on Tuesdays in the science lab.  For more details, please contact Marcia Alessi
