St. Paul the Apostle School Educational Endowment


Mission Statement

The Saint Paul the Apostle School Endowment Fund is an endowed fund dedicated to securing the legacy of St. Paul the Apostle School.

Our goal is $4,000,000.
The principal is invested to generate interest income.
The interest earned will be distributed to the school to:

  • Support faculty excellence
  • Keep tuition affordable
  • Provide income for school improvements and repairs.

The Endowment Fund is a plan for our future generations of students.

Jackie and Dan Cathcart
Jackie and Dan Cathcart joined the Endowment Board of Trustees in 2001. Dan is a founding partner of the firm Magaña, Cathcart, & McCarthy. As devoted parishioners, Dan and Jackie have interwoven their family life with the St. Paul the Apostle community. Their son Peter is married to Tina Cathcart, who currently serves as the President of Parents Working with Children (PWC). Both of their children graduated from St. Paul the Apostle School which establishes the Cathcarts as a true legacy at St. Paul the Apostle. Jackie and Dan Cathcart share the gift of the Holy Eucharist with those who are in need, ministering to patients at the UCLA Medical Center. In continued allegiance to the Medical Center, the Cathcarts also serve on the board of the St. James Inn, a closely affiliated charity founded by the late Paulist Fr. Patrick Traynor. The St. James Inn provides families of the sick and dying at the Medical Center with shelter and spiritual support through difficult times.


Kathleen Felesina
Kathleen Felesina joined the Endowment Board of Trustees in 2006. Through an exciting international career as a writer, Kathleen has developed a strong connection to the people of the world and to their stories. After writing for her college newspaper in London as an exchange student, Kathleen worked for NBC in Hong Kong for three years.  Returning to Los Angeles, she worked on numerous projects, published pieces in The Los Angeles Times and LA Parent Magazine among others, and collaborated with Lou Dantzler on the book A Place to Go, A Place to Grow: Simple Things That Make a Difference for At-Risk Kids, published in 2006 by Rodale Press.  She continues to follow her writing vocation, especially in cases where difficult social issues are at stake. Kathleen is a parishioner and a current school parent with a daughter, Zoe, in the second grade and a son, Daniel, in the fifth. She balances her busy career and family life with many involvements at St. Paul the Apostle School, including serving on the School Board since 2006. She is married to her husband Peter, who is the Treasurer of the School Foundation.


Aimee and Ed Hookstratten
Aimee and Ed Hookstratten joined the Endowment Boare in 2009. Ed is a longtime entertainment lawyer/manager,guiding the careers of many prominent news and sports personalities, as well as television personalities. After graduation from USC and Southwestern Law School, Ed maintained strong ties to both schools. serving on the Athletic Board at USC, as well as being a lifetime member of the Board of Trustees at Southwestern. Ed is a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame at USC, and was awarded the Merit award in 2004, honoring individual alumni. He also chaired the fundraising for Dedeaux Field, as well as the Dedeaux Field Revisted campaign. Aimee is the co-founder and co-owner of Plumeria Fine Cookies, and takes an active and supportive role in the St. Paul's school community, as an art docent. grade-art chair, booth captain and serving on the Endowmwnent Board.


Kathleen L. McCarthy
Kathleen L. McCarthy joined the Endowment Board of Trustees in 2001. A shining asset to the Catholic community and a representative of its core values in Los Angeles and beyond, Ms. McCarthy received the Cardinal’s Award in 2004 for her philanthropic achievements. A graduate of Marymount High School and the University of Southern California, she serves on the Board of Trustees for USC and for Loyola Marymount University. She holds honorary degrees from USC and LMU, as well as from Santa Clara University and St. Patrick’s College in Maynooth, Ireland. A plethora of further involvements include the Board of Catholic Education Foundation for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the Junior League of Los Angeles, the St. Ignatius Guild of Loyola High School, and the St. John’s Hospital Foundation. Ms. McCarthy is a parishioner and a past school parent, married to the late J. Thomas McCarthy, a respected attorney. In 1970-1971, she served as President of the Paulist Women’s Club (PWC), and she remains deeply invested in the community along with her four children and 13 grandchildren, three of whom currently attend St. Paul’s.


John Plueger
John Plueger joined the Endowment Board of Trustees in 2002. John is President, Chief Operating Officer, and Member of the Board of International Lease Finance Corporation, a worldwide airliner leasing company. John also serves on the Boards of various charitable, civic, and industry organizations including serving as Vice Chairman of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. He, along with his wife Celeste and their two children, have been members of St. Paul the Apostle parish since 1992, and both of their children attended St. Paul the Apostle School. John’s wife, Celeste, was active in the Parents Working for Children (PWC), where she held positions including Room Parent, Room Parent Chair, as well as serving various committee roles. The Plueger family founded and ran, through 2005, the annual family ski trip which has become a tradition at St. Paul’s.

Barbera Hale Thornhill
Barbera Hale Thornhill joined the Endowment Board of Trustees in 2006. As President of Impact Design, Inc., she holds a strong business presence through a career that has followed a philosophical path, influenced by free enterprise and an international perspective both in business and the arts. In addition to her professional achievements, Barbera serves on the Board for the Paulist Choristers of California here at St. Paul the Apostle School. She is a member of the Junior League, Women’s Museum Foundation of Washington D.C., Show Coalition of Los Angeles, American Film Institute Associates, Literacy Partners in New York and SHARE, an organization of women for the good of orphaned children. She also served on the Board of Trustees of St. Mary’s School, Raleigh, North Carolina and Duke University Medical Hospital, Durham, North Carolina. Barbera and her husband Gary Wilson are parishioners and current school parents with a son, Hale, a fourth-grader who sings with the Paulist Choristers.
