Baptized Christians are people who have been living a Christian life and are called to the Catholic Church for various reasons. They are called candidates and hold special status by means of their baptism.
They may be drawn into the liturgy, the way of life, or are married or engaged to a Catholic, or are Catholics seeking to complete their initiation. RCIA for the baptized provides a place to learn about the Catholic faith and participate in the liturgy. It is a time for the Christian faith to take deeper root through faith formation, contact with the community of worshipers and participation in liturgical rites that strengthen them in the Christian life. They are accompanied by sponsors who walk with them on the journey toward full initiation into the Catholic Church. Like those who are unbaptized they participate in weekly sessions and other special times of prayer and reflection. The time of formation is such that the seeds of Catholic life are planted deeply within them.
Like the unbaptized they enter first a period of inquiry in which they ask questions, hear the stories of others, and share in a faith experience. When this time is over they participate in the Rite of Welcoming where they publicly declare that they wish to continue the journey they began in baptism. At the end of the formation period, coinciding with Lent, the candidate participates in penitential rights that further purify their hearts as they ready themselves for Confirmation and First Eucharist.
